Good News/Bad News

Montana Senate Passes Stream Access Bill - good news. Passes the bill onto Montana's House of Representatives - bad news. Those assclowns are nuts. They will probabally pass SB78 only if it has an amendment to ban abortion or punish people who switch parties with the death penalty.

CATARACT CANYON

We are just about two months away from launching, and in one month, I have to send in a list of all of the people that will be coming on Cataract as well as the number of boats. If you want to go on this trip, I need a commitment in the form of a $50 non-refundable check before March 1. If you can’t commit by March 1, then we will show you photographs of the trip you missed when we get back. If you plan on taking a guest, you or your guest needs to send $50.

Here is the plan: we are going to meet at the Potash launch site on Saturday April 7, with hopefully enough daylight left to start rigging the boats. We’ll launch Sunday, April 8 (Easter) and then take-out on Saturday April 14. Hopefully we will be able to float all the way to the take-out, but apparently they have been getting hammered with snow in the mountains in that area, and if Powell reservoir fills, we will need to get a tug out to Hite Marina. Another option if there is no current to the take-out is to have a house boat waiting for us and we can take a layover day on Powell reservoir, instead of on the river. We just have to wait and see what the reservoir levels are as it gets closer, but all signs indicate that there should be current all the way to the takeout.

Meals: We are going to do this trip a little differently. We are going to break into cook groups. Your cook group will be responsible for providing all the food for everyone for three meals (lunch, dinner, breakfast), cooking/cleaning, and setting up and taking down the kitchen for at least one and maybe two days, depending on the number of people that finally go on the trip.

Even though I am officially the TL on the National Park Service form, Walt and I are going to be joint TL’s. Walt is going to coordinate with the folks from Missoula and Florida, and I am going to coordinate the folks from Helena and Boise. Obviously we want people to car pool to minimize shuttle fees, we don’t want to eat the same thing everyday, won’t need 18 river tables, so there will be a lot of communication/coordination, which is why we need a definite commitment by March 1.

Here are the people that have committed so far:

Ed and Auto
Walt and Sassy
Artie
Jesse
Heffe
Mikey
Cleaver
Ryan

If you are not one of the people on the list and you definitely plan on going, please drop me and Walt an email. Please note that if anyone intends to kayak, they need to make arrangements with a rafter to carry their gear before they show up. Thanks and here are some links.
